Abstract The Indian National Movement was not just led by some of its most eminent male figures, as women played a crucial role in the struggle for Indian independence. Women from various strata of society actively participated in political, social, and revolutionary movements from the late nineteenth century to 1947. Women like Rani Lakshmibai, Sarojini Naidu, Annie Besant, Kasturba, Aruna Asaf Ali, to name a few, rallied masses, organized protests, disseminated nationalist ideologies, and defied colonial rule. Women participated actively in most significant movements like Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience, and Quit India Movements, suffering arrest, suppression, and societal opposition. Women’s role was not just about politics since they actively contributed to societal change, enhancements in education, and development of a national spirit in India. Women’s role in the Indian National Movement not only added strength to the freedom movement but also helped shape India’s future by forming the basis of women’s empowerment in independent India.
