A transcription of a papal inquest of depositions in front of John Galand and William of Saint-Seine (fonds Doat, vol. 32, fol. 163r-243r)

Abstract

This is a working transcription of the papal inquest into interrogations in front of John Galand (Jean Galand) and William of Saint-Seine (Guillaume de Saint-Seine) from the manuscript in Fonds Doat (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, fonds Doat, vol. 32, fol. 163r-243r). It documents an enquiry conducted by an anonymous canonist, appointed by the papacy to evaluate the reliability of a disputed inquisitorial register and to provide formal advice on procedural uncertainties and complaints. The text we publish here should not be considered a critical edition, but gives access to previously unpublished inquisition material, and does that in a digital and reusable form (see licence). We appreciate suggestions for corrections wherever you spot errors. The format is plain text, without critical apparatus or other editorial markup. It can thus be directly used - besides human reading - for computational text analysis. The sections are separated with three empty paragraphs, thus allowing to work with the text segmented into meaningful parts. Folio breaks are marked in the text by markup such as , which needs to be removed or given special treatment in computational text analysis (it sometimes appears also in the middle of words). The transcriptions were done by Daniela Wallnerová (editor), who holds 95% contribution, and supervised and revised by David Zbíral, who holds 5% contribution. The transcription has received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 101000442, project “Networks of Dissent: Computational Modelling of Dissident and Inquisitorial Cultures in Medieval Europe”).
