El petróleo y la carrera por los recursos estratégicos en Malvinas, Atlántico Sur y Antártida

Abstract

Se analiza la disputa geopolítica que se cierne en torno a los recursos hidrocarburíferos del Atlántico Sur y la Antártida, considerando las implicaciones estratégicas que ello presenta para la disputa de la soberanía existente sobre estas regiones, en un mundo en pleno caos sistémico y de transición de poder. En las aguas de las Islas Malvinas, usurpadas a la Argentina por Reino Unido en 1833, se anuncia el próximo inicio de la fase de extracción petrolera con el proyecto Sea Lion, luego de décadas de prospecciones y exploraciones del gran potencial de la zona. En el “continente blanco”, cuyos depósitos de petróleo son conocidos desde los años 80, aunque su usufructo se encuentra prohibido por el Sistema del Tratado Antártico, se anunció recientemente el presunto “hallazgo petrolero del siglo”, plagado de suspicacias y motivaciones geopolíticas. Se analizan aquí en profundidad estos fenómenos, su historia y actualidad, concluyendo que, a pesar del auge de la agenda global de transición energética, el petróleo sigue jugando aún un rol clave en la carrera en curso por el acceso y la disponibilidad sobre recursos naturales estratégicos, en particular para las regiones bajo estudio, las cuales se revalorizan ante la reconfiguración geopolítica y geoeconómica contemporánea
