Potential for conservation use for the Minas Gerais State, Brazil

Abstract

v3. Include a new soil data base (ibge) v2. Update considering two options of soil database (ufv and embrapa). v2. We also fix the potential for agricultural use weight associated to the slope classes. [en] To compute the potential for conservation use, we implemented the methodology PUC which assigns to the lithology levels, soil class, and slope a score between 1 and 5. The score reflects the potential for water recharge, agricultural use, and resistance to erosion (Costa et al., 2017). The potential for agricultural use is associated with drainage, fertility, and effective soil depth. Drainage is related to the capacity of supplying water and oxygen to the soil; fertility is related to the natural availability of the soil to provide nutrients, and the effective depth is related to space for the development of the root system and internal drainage of the profile. The water recharge and the erosion resistance took into account the runoff rate and the opportunity time to water infiltration.
