La partería en México: Crónica de una resistencia

Abstract

En este capítulo se hace un recuento de la partería en México como una práctica ancestral que ha existido desde la época prehispánica. A lo largo de la historia, la partería en México ha enfrentado cambios y desafíos debido a la influencia de la medicina occidental y los proyectos políticos. Aunque el sistema de atención médica en el país no ha garantizado una cobertura total, la partería continúa siendo una práctica importante, especialmente en regiones de difícil acceso y marginalidad. Los médicos del siglo XIX consideraban que su medicina estaba fundamentada científicamente y denunciaban las prácticas de las parteras tradicionales como perniciosas. En el siglo XXI, las parteras siguen enfrentando desafíos. Por un lado, están las parteras tradicionales que atienden embarazos en zonas rurales y comunidades indígenas y, por otro lado, están aquellas que cuentan con certificación, pero no trabajan en hospitales. Concluyen que, a pesar de múltiples factores adversos, las parteras han resistido y siguen siendo importantes en la atención de embarazos y cuidados de las madres y los bebés.
