Abstract

The study examines the historical, cartographic, and structural evolution of the bridges crossing the Tagus River in Extremadura, drawing on a wide range of sources including maps, military plans, drawings, engravings, and historical photographs. The research shows that the cartographic representation of these bridges was shaped by defensive, administrative, hydraulic, and navigational purposes, particularly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when engineers such as Luis Carducci carried out detailed surveys of the river to assess its navigability and the feasibility of technical interventions. Key structures are analyzed, including the Puente del Conde, the Almaraz Bridge, and especially the Alconétar Bridge, documented through nineteenth-century engravings, eighteenth-century engineering projects, and photographs taken before its relocation due to the construction of the Alcántara reservoir. The study reveals how these bridges underwent significant transformations as a result of war damage, repeated repairs, and modern hydraulic works that altered their appearance and function. One of the most relevant findings is the demonstration that historical cartography is an essential tool for understanding the strategic, territorial, and landscape role of these bridges within the historical communication network of the Tagus basin, allowing a reconstruction of their material evolution and their importance in the configuration of the region. DIGITAL EDITION: the work also has a digital edition, ISBN: 978-84-9852-392-8 (similar to the printed edition).
