Abstract

The Thesis offers a characterisation of trade unions as non-governmental organisations and social partners; an evaluation of peculiarities of trade unions as organisations; an analysis of development of strategic management approaches and strategic management peculiarities in trade unions. The study shows that so far no systematic approach has been used in trade union management theories. In addition, the role of leadership in trade unions has not been assessed sufficiently, especially during the stage of strategy implementation and evaluation. The study confirms existing imperfections of strategic management in Latvian trade unions. Based on the analysis of the theoretical sources, as well as the analysis of the expert interviews and the trade union member survey, the author has created a strategic management model and its practical utilisation process for Latvian trade unions. Key words: trade unions, strategic management, leadership, member participation.
