A tracer study of dispersion in an urban street canyon

Abstract
A study of retention time, defined as the length of time for a pollutant concentration with its source turned off to reach e−1 of its original value, has been carried out with SF6 tracer gas in an urban street canyon for the case of ambient winds perpendicular to the street. Retention times are found to be between 0.7 and 3.8 min for ambient winds ranging from 1.7 to 4.5 m s−1. The associated ventilation velocity, representing an average velocity of pollutant transported out of the canyon, is found to range between 15 and 80 cm s−1.
