Abstract

Introduction: Each year approximately 140 Norwegian children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer. When a child gets diagnosed with cancer, the safe everyday life becomes filled with uncertainty and fear. The child might feel helpless and experience that the parents are as scared as the child himself. Therefore, it is important that nurses possess sufficient knowledge about the child's development, needs and behaviour. Aim: The aim is to explain the child’s perspective on a cancer diagnosis and identify what nurses can do to meet the needs of the child so that the child can cope with the situation. Method: In this study literature review is used as method. Result: Based on the seven selected studies, three main topics were identified; the child’s needs, cancerrelated stressors and the child’s coping strategies. Combined, these themes highlight the child’s perspective on a cancer diagnosis. Conclusion: Being diagnosed with cancer is stressful for the child and brings significant changes to the child’s everyday life. These changes make the child feel insecure and create several stressors. The child’s most important need is feeling safe and it plays an important part in the child’s coping. The parents make the child feel safe and thus have a significant role in the child’s coping.
