Percepção da imagem corporal dos adolescentes

Abstract

Teenagers are faced with several changes, be they physical or psychosocial, and at times have difficulties in dealing with these alterations. These changes can have repercussions on self-confidence and self-esteem, which consequently can affect the vulnerability of these teenagers. Changes to body shape are usually connected to cognitive, affective, social, cultural and motor factors. There is a problematic trend connected to body shape, attention has been drawn to this not only by the media but also by health professionals, and is visible to all society. This problem, frequently referred to as “Epidemia do Século XXI” (The 21st Century Epidemic) is called obesity. As mentioned before, this is a current problem in developed countries and some registers show that this is particular to teenagers. In the light of these problems, it seemed relevant to carry out a study on the issue of “Percepção da imagem corporal dos adolescentes” (Teenagers’ body image awareness). In order to complete this task, a simple descriptive study with a quantitative approach was carried out, a sample was taken from 61 secondary school teenagers, with an age average of 16.57 years, that attend Escola Secundária Carolina Michaelis. In order to get these responses, students were asked to answer a questionnaire on the 24th and 25th November 2011. This study confirmed the existence of teenagers with low body weight (3,3%), teenagers with excessive weight (13,2%) and obese teenagers (8,2%). However, results showed that most of the population have a normal body weight, round about 75,3%. Most of the teenagers who took part in this case study were dissatisfied with their body shape (62,3%), as well as this, there was a clear correlation between their perceived body image and the body shape assessed (73,8%). By using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), we were able
