Abstract

Acinetobacter baumannii es actualmente uno de los patógenos oportunistas más relevantes responsable de infecciones nosocomiales en todo el mundo, destacando por su exitosa habilidad para desarrollar resistencia frente a una gran variedad de antibióticos. Algunos de los mecanismos más importantes incluyen β-lactamasas, enzimas modificadoras de aminoglicósidos, bombas de eflujo, defectos de permeabilidad o modificación de dianas. Esta amplia variedad de habilidades evasoras hacen que tan solo unos pocos antibióticos sean útiles en el tratamiento de las infecciones causadas por A. baumannii, lo cual hace que sea todo un reto adoptar una estrategia terapéutica efectiva. Los carbapenems han sido tradicionalmente la terapia de elección para el tratamiento de A. baumannii, pero el número de resistencias ha aumentado drásticamente y actualmente se opta por terapias combinadas donde la colistina es el agente protagonista. Sin embargo, ya se han detectado cepas resistentes a la colistina, lo cual hace que las infecciones causadas por Acinetobacter baumannii sean un problema de salud pública mundial, y convierte la investigación y el desarrollo de nuevos antibióticos en una necesidad.
