Estigma y salud mental: estigma internalizado

Abstract

Las personas con trastornos mentales graves (TMG) se ven doblemente afectadas por los síntomas característicos del problema de salud mental (SM) y por los efectos negativos del estigma social. Éste estigma muy frecuentemente se internaliza provocando un impacto aún más perjudicial para esta población. Concretamente el estigma internalizado (EI) se define como un proceso subjetivo que se expresa en tres dimensiones. Una dimensión cognitiva, caracterizada por creencias estereotipadas asociadas al trastorno, que son aceptadas y aplicadas sobre sí; una dimensión emocional, referida a los sentimientos negativos que resultan de la adherencia a estos estereotipos; y una dimensión conductual, manifestada en comportamientos autodiscriminatorios como el aislamiento (Livingston et al., 2010)...
