Sexualitat i Síndrome de Down: Parlem-ne

Abstract

In the 22nd century there are still myths and prejudices about the sexuality of people with Down’s syndrome. In addition, families are deeply concerned about their children’s sexuality, as people with intellectual disabilities are more likely to be sexually abused. For this reason, the aim of this study was to find out if there are still social prejudices and false beliefs that limit and hinder the development of the sexuality of people with Down syndrome as well as, the knowledge of the families and professionals who attend this group around sexuality. To meet the proposed objectives, a questionnaire was passed to people with Down syndrome, a questionnaire to families and a questionnaire to professionals working with people with Down syndrome and families. The results obtained in the three instruments show that both people with Down’s syndrome and families in general follow the same concerns and concerns about sexuality, while professionals go beyond the areas in question. But the family emphasizes a lack of information, resources, tools, and strategies to provide sex education to their children with Down syndrome at home. Therefore, a series of suggestions has been prepared in order to make resources available to families and that they can use it.
