Abstract

La presente publicación, tiene por objetivo ofrecer, a los interesados en el cultivo de arveja, estudiantes de las ciencias agrarias, profesionales, así como a agricultores y público en general, el estudio del proceso productivo de la arveja de una manera clara, sencilla, enfatizando en aspectos de importancia para su comprensión objetiva. Se inicia resaltando la importancia de su cultivo como agente productivo para los productores y consumidores, atravesando por toda una suerte de agentes de acopio y distribución para llegar a los consumidores y su utilización como complemento culinario, resaltando sus beneficios en la salud humana. Dado que el centro de origen de este cultivo se encuentra en el mediterráneo, se analiza el proceso de introducción a nuestro continente y las regiones donde se adaptaron con mayor eficiencia. La morfología y taxonomía son tratadas con la mayor exhaustividad, para la comprensión botánica y de clasificación que son de gran importancia. De igual manera, la fenología y ecología resaltando las etapas críticas en el proceso de desarrollo vegetativo y reproductivo. El conjunto de propiedades y funciones de los tejidos y órganos de la planta de arveja, son abordados con minuciosidad; así como, los principios básicos del mejoramiento genético en el que se encuentra la biología floral, los mecanismos reproductivos y las técnicas para incrementar la variabilidad genética son cuidadosamente reportados.
