La conexión empática y de apoyo entre el profesional y el paciente puede ser una fuente de gratificación, pero también puede dar lugar a un costo emocional para el profesional que provee el cuidado. La fatiga por compasión (FC) surge cuando los profesionales de la salud experimentan un agotamiento emocional y una disminución de la satisfacción en el trabajo debido a la exposición constante a situaciones de sufrimiento y dolor en sus pacientes. Esta realidad puede tener repercusiones tanto para la calidad de la atención brindada como en la afectación de la salud mental de los propios profesionales. Desde el año 2020 a raíz de la propagación mundial de la enfermedad por coronavirus (COVID-19) el personal de salud ha estado involucrado en una crisis sanitaria que puede haber afectado su salud mental. Esta investigación tuvo como propósito identificar la presencia de FC, sus características y su relación con la afectación de la salud mental del personal médico y de enfermería del Hospital San José del Callao durante la pandemia por COVID-19 en el 2022. Se realizó un estudio descriptivo correlacional transversal, en el que participaron el personal médico, personal de enfermería y técnicos de enfermería. La FC y la afectación de la salud mental se registraron con el Cuestionario de Fatiga por Compasión y Satisfacción (ProQOL-vIV) y el Cuestionario General de Salud (GHQ-12), respectivamente. Participaron 127 trabajadores de salud, se encontraron promedios de 13.02±6.987 de FC y 2.13±2.914 de salud mental percibida. La mayoría de participantes mostró un nivel medio de FC (46.5%) y ausencia de psicopatología (81.9%). Se halló una relación positiva, moderada y significativa entre la FC y la afectación de la salud mental (rs=.502) del personal sanitario. Se subraya la importancia de salvaguardar la salud mental del personal sanitario mediante enfoques tanto a nivel individual como organizacional.

The empathetic and supportive connection between professionals and patients can be a source of gratification, but it can also lead to emotional costs for the caregiving professional. Compassion fatigue (CF) emerges when healthcare practitioners experience emotional exhaustion and reduced job satisfaction due to constant exposure to situations of suffering and pain in their patients. This reality can have implications for both the quality of care provided and the mental health of the professionals themselves. Since 2020, following the global spread of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19), healthcare staff have been involved in an unprecedented health crisis that may have impacted their mental health. This research aimed to identify the presence of CF, its characteristics, and its relationship with the impact on the mental health of medical and nursing staff at Hospital San José del Callao during the 2022 COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional correlational descriptive study was conducted, involving medical personnel, nursing staff, and nursing technicians. CF and mental health impact were assessed using the Compassion Fatigue and Satisfaction Questionnaire (ProQOL-vIV) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12), respectively. A total of 127 healthcare workers participated, with average CF scores of 13.02±6.987 and perceived mental health scores of 2.13±2.914. The majority of participants exhibited a moderate level of CF (46.5%) and an absence of psychopathology (81.9%). A significant, moderate, and positive relationship was found between CF and mental health (rs=.502) among healthcare workers. The importance of safeguarding the mental health of healthcare personnel is emphasized through approaches at both individual and organizational levels.
