La secuencia de cordones litorales de Colán (Piura): un registro del fenómeno 'El Niño' en el holoceno superior

Abstract

La serie de ocho cordones litorales preservada en Colan representa probablemente un registro de los mayores eventos "El Niño" ocurridos entre 3.200 y 800 años BP. Los cordones están constituidos por cantos provenientes de una capa conglomerática aflorante en el acantilado que rodea la bahía arenosa de Colán. Tanto el suministro de los cantos a la playa, como su acumulación en forma de cordones supratidales, requieren condiciones oceanográficas y meteorológicas particulares que coinciden con las que caracterizan el fenómeno del Niño en esta área. Las condiciones de sedimentación, favorables a una progradación de la linea de costa, así como la configuración topográfica de la bahía explican que desde hace casi un milenio ningún cordón adicional haya podido formarse. Una serie de datacionea por radiocarbono de conchas incluidas en los cordones proporcionan una cronología relativa de los mismos. Según esta, lapsos que varían de uno a cuatro siglos separan la formación de los cordones. Se interpreta que estos intervalos de tiempo corresponden a los que separan loa mayores eventos "El Niño" (llamados "mega—El Niño" por algunos autores) durante el periodo considerado, en el Holoceno superior.
