Some mechanical properties of eastern beech wood

Abstract

This study determined some mechanical properties (compression, static bending, impact bending and shear strengths) of eastern beech wood (Fagus orientalis Lipsky.) and to compared them with other beeches. The materials studied were randomly selected from pure beech stands, naturally grown in Andirm-Kahramanmaraş, and these were prepared and tested according to Turkish Standards. The results showed that the mean compression strength was 60.6 N/mm2, the mean static bending strength was 120.4 N/mm 2, the mean impact-bending strength was 0.085 Nm/mm2 and the mean shear strength was 9.9 N/mm2. The relations of strengths with density were determined using regression analysis, and were compared with other values available in literature. As a result of this comparison, it was shown that Andirin beech wood has similar mechanical properties to the other beech woods.
