FACADE DESIGNS IN TRADITIONAL AFYONKARAHISAR HOUSES

Abstract

Turks built houses suitable for every region's conditions they lived and their own uniqe characteristics, especially in Anatolia. These houses are put together as a whole with their functional and aesthetic values, which are suitable for people's physical measurements. Afyonkarahisar, located on the Central Anatolia border of Aegean Region, due to it's location has served as a brigde between the east and west and between the north and the south by linking the Marmara and Central Anatolia regions to the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Despite being closer to the Central Anatolia, it is a syntheses of Aegean and middle Anatolian culture in terms of social, cultural, economical, art and architecture. Located in the old Afyonkarahisar urban texture and most of which registered traditional Afyonkarahisar houses are mostly located on the skirts of the Afyonkarahisar Castle and around the Great Mosque. Traditional Afyonkarahisar houses were generally built on two or three floors. The sense of depth is increased, since houses are laid together and most of the entrances are located in street side. In this context, Traditional Afyonkarahisar houses have their uniqe facade architecture and therefore uniqe ornamental concept. Entrance desings of houses, eaves, window and door desings, bracket supports and other bearing elements and wooden bond timbers that specify floors are the elements which enliven facades. In addition, these houses uniqe desings are remarkable with roof-level belvederes, metalwork or wooden window cages, heart motifs on some bracket supports, metal door handles and knobs. Thus, Traditional Afyonkarahisar houses are unique examples with their different designs and decorations from other houses in the immediate vicinity. In this study, only a limited number of samples from the traditional Afyonkarahisar houses are chosen. Houses, that are selected from main roads and streets around the Great Mosque, have been examined. These samples are categorized within themselves, supported with photographs and drawings try to reveal the place and importance of Traditional Afyonkarahisar houses in Turkish civil architecture.
