Abstract

Diversos factores de orden climático y económico hacen difícil manejar técnica y racionalmente los pastos tradicionales que forman las praderas de las zonas frías de Colombia. La remolacha forrajera no ha recibido el cuidado por parte de investigadores y la aceptación de ganaderos, que realmente merece. Esta planta bianual produce tubérculos de forma cónica de longitud entre 18 y 30 cm. y diámetros en su parte más ancha entre 10 y 30 cm. de acuerdo con la edad de la planta. Se adapta a suelos francoarcillosos y tolera salinidad. La siembra se hace con semillas previamente humedecidas, en cantidad de 2.5 a 3.5 kg/ha, ejecutando raleo y transplante cuando sea necesario. A los 6 meses de siembra se obtienen 14.3 t de materia seca, de 10.3 por ciento de proteina cruda, 90 por ciento de digestibilidad y 1.3 por ciento de Ca. La remolacha forrajera además de su alto potencial energético posee otras ventajas que deben ser consideradas por investigadores y ganaderos como oportunidad de utilización, ya que puede permanecer en el campo hasta 10 meses luego de ser sembrada y puede ser conservada luego en silos convencionales
