Abstract

In our country the renewable species Pinus Elliottii and Pinus Taeda are the main suppliers of the raw material for the production of sawn timber for construction. Currently, trees from both species are marketed and used together due to the difficulty of distinguishing them after the sawing process. No studies are available to show a significant difference between its physical-mechanical properties. In order to determine the level of significance between Pinus Elliottii´s and Pinus Taeda´s mechanical behavior, an empirical project enclosing 2 samples (233 boards) was designed. Bending strength, stiffness and density were determined by following the procedures of IRAM 9663. The results showed that, in spite of some discrepancy related to the density, both species have similar mechanical behavior, which is in line with the criterion adopted by Argentinean standards (CIRSOC 601; IRAM 96623; IRAM 9670) that consider the two species together for structural use.
