The book presents selected aspects of the emergence, development and functioning of the European Union, taking into account the legal status as of 1999, when the book was published. It covers such issues as: (1) the history of European integration, starting with the situation in Europe after World War II and the establishment of the European Communities in the 1950s, till the entry into force of the Amsterdam Treaty on May 1, 1999; (2) the institutional system and decision-making process of the European Union; (3) economic and monetary integration within the European Union; (4) the Common Foreign and Security Policy; (5) relations of the European Union with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe.

W książce ukazane są wybrane aspekty powstania, rozwoju i funkcjonowania Unii Europejskiej, biorąc pod uwagę stan prawny na rok 1999, kiedy pozycja została opublikowana.
