Clasificación de Enfermedades Periodontales, un tema controversial

Abstract

El propósito de este artículo es que el lector se familiarice con la evolución histórica que han tenido las clasificaciones de las enfermedades periodontales. Aprovecho la ocasión para homenajear a los distinguidos profesores que a través de los años permitieron que esto fuera posible. Desde que los odontólogos comenzaron a interesarse por la periodoncia, ha existido un debate sobre su diagnóstico y clasificación. Enfrentamos una enfermedad infecciosa, crónica, sindrómica, poligénica, multifactorial y extraña. El nombre de una enfermedad constituye una forma conveniente de formular de un modo abreviado el punto final de un proceso diagnóstico que evoluciona desde la evaluación de los síntomas y signos hasta el conocimiento de la causa (1). El primer término específico para enfermedad periodontal fue introducido por Pierre Fauchard en el año 1923 "escorbuto de encías", desde esta época comienzan a introducirse diferentes denominaciones basadas en características clínicas, patológicas o factores etiológicos, como ser piorrea alveolaris, gingivitis expulsiva, pararizoclasia, osteítis infecciosa crónica entre otros.(AU)
