Abstract

La producción viverística conlleva la propagación de plantas, que puede ser del tipo sexual (reproducción por semilla) o por procedimientos de multiplicación orgánica (esquejes o estacas, acodo, injerto o tallos y raíces especializados, como estolones, rizomas, cormos y bulbos). La importancia económica es de gran envergadura si juzgamos a tenor del volumen de material vegetal que se importa a través de empresas extranjeras especializadas en propagación. En España un buen número de cultivadores propagan para sí mismos algunas de las especies o cultivares que subsiguientemente cultivan; pero existe toda un industria de propagación: viveros especializados en producción de esquejes enraizados que venden a los cultivadores o en la producción de plántulas procedentes de semilla y dispuestas para ser enmacetadas. La producción especializada de esquejes se da sobre todo en plantas de interior, arbustos y algo en coníferas, sin embargo la segunda especialidad es propia de las plantas de temporada. Por último, podemos incluir aquí la importante industria de la multiplicación de plantas a partir de cultivo de tejidos. El injerto sé utiliza muy poco en el cultivo industrial de plantas ornamentales en maceta, solo ocasionalmente se usa en Ahododendron, Camellia, Gardenia, Hibiscus, etc.
