[EN]An increase in the frequency and intensity of the tropical cyclones (TCs) that made landfall in the state of Veracruz, which is located in the central region of the Gulf of Mexico, has been observed since the last 30 years. These phenomena affect the regional precipitation and geographical factors -such as: closeness to a coastline, TC size, topography (plains and mountains) and kind of trajectory- have a different impact in causing disasters. This study carries out an empirical assessment of five TCs that made landfall in Veracruz: 1) Gert, 1993 category 2 at the time of making landfall, 2) Stan, 2005 category 1 at the moment when affected Veracruz, 3) Dean, 2007 category 2, 4) Karl, 2010 category 3 and 5) Franklin, 2017 category 1 at the time of making landfall. From this evaluation, a need for improving the application of models in different scales, whose formulation should consider geographical factors as elements that influence the strength of hazards, was identified. Our recommendations point out that the aforementioned factors exacerbate hazards.
