The current trend in medical education is to encourage self-directed learning and problem-solving skills while decreasing passive learning. To support this educational trend, one needs to identify and develop new methods of providing problem-based and case-based learning.Developing, implementing and evaluating a chart-based case that more closely models traditional primary care for use in the second year of medical education.A total of 45 second year medical students participated in a case-based study incorporating patient charts, SOAP note and test acquisition forms.A statistically significant increase was observed in student self-rated proficiency in eight domains of clinical medical management.Chart-based, case-based learning is an effective methodology for introducing and increasing the knowledge about clinical medical management for second year medical students.
