Abstract

Questa è una delle prime ricerche sulla Storia delle Relazioni internazionali della Santa Sede, basata sulle carte del pontificato di Pio XII, aperte il 2 marzo 2020. I grandi temi della diplomazia vaticana sono affrontati facendo uso egli archivi vaticani ma anche di altri archivi, specialmente di quelli anglosassoni ed europei, confrontando poi le risultanze documentarie con la storiografia esistente. L’apertura delle carte degli Archivi Vaticani sul pontificato di Eugenio Pacelli ha peraltro inaugurato una nuova fase di studi di cui si iniziano a conoscere i primi frutti e specialmente le nuove prospettive, disponibili per chi si interroga sulla complessità degli eventi e delle scelte compiute da uomini e istituzioni prima, durante e dopo la seconda guerra mondiale. Si chiariscono altresì alcuni aspetti, talvolta considerati controversi, del pontificato di Eugenio Pacelli e circa il suo coinvolgimento nel quadro diplomatico generale della prima metà del Novecento. Lo studio è basato su fonti primarie e secondarie.
