Bobacterii et Mercatores in late medieval Rome: topography and epigraphy

Abstract

La tesi analizza il complesso sviluppo delle pratiche di autorappresentazione dei gruppi sociali a forte valenza economica, correlati alle due corporazioni principali della Roma tardo medievale: ars bobacterium e ars mercatoris. L'analisi delle strategie di autorappresentazione adottate dai mercatores e bobacterii rivela un processo di distinzione sociale che si esprimeva attraverso l'uso mirato della cultura materiale, in particolare le commissioni architettonica, e epigrafiche e la disseminazione topografica. La costruzione di palazzi, complessi urbani e cappelle familiari, così come la commissione di iscrizioni pubbliche e funerarie, non erano semplici manifestazioni di vanità, ma rappresentavano atti deliberati volti a esibire ricchezza, influenza e appartenenza civica. I mercatores e bobacterii romani rappresentano un caso di studio affascinante per comprendere le dinamiche di ascesa sociale in un contesto urbano complesso e stratificato come Roma. Pur non raggiungendo la stessa prominenza dei loro omologhi in altre città italiane, seppero ritagliarsi uno spazio di influenza e prestigio, adattando le loro strategie di autorappresentazione alle peculiarità di Roma. Le loro dinamiche e strategie di autorappresentazioni, ci offrono uno sguardo sulla complessa interazione tra fattori economici, politici, sociali e culturali nel plasmare l'identità di un gruppo sociale emergente nel tardo Medioevo.
