Doblaje versus subtitulación: una querella clásica

Abstract

The dispute between supporters of dubbing and subtitled version is a classic debate that resurfaces periodically in the audiovisual field. These are not the only two solutions to overcome the language barrier in communicating audiovisual works, however, they are the options that have prevailed. Spain is still a mainly dubbing country due to a confluence of factors (socio-cultural, political, historical, economic, technical ...). It is the goal of this article to summarize the main reasons given for and against each one of these two translating strategies. To those classic views we would like to add some others drawn from our study of the parallel debate that has taken place in the world of opera: opera sung translated into the language of the audience versus opera with surtitles. We understand that, despite the differences arising from the nature of live performance present in opera, many of the arguments are applicable to the audiovisual field of cinema and television and can contribute to enrich the debate.
