The Efficiency of using agents in export

Abstract

ABSTRACT: With the recent developments in the information technology, the world hâs seemingly become smaller. Everything has become more global. As the information flows more quickly, so does foreign trade. Today, everyone can sell a product to a market with a demand for it from the market price. The shrinking of the world has not lessened the competition but has made it even more difficult for any `domestic` company. The aim of this study is to find out if using agents in export is really efficient or not, in terms of increasing the number of customers in the specific market that the agent dwells. Being more efficient is a must since the competition is in the global arena, no longer protected with the walls of protectionism. The study starts with the general concepts of globalization of the world, the internationalization of the company and the various theories that try to explain this phenomenon. Then foreign trade is discussed in detail, being the most basic way for internationalization. Exports and the mediums that are used to conduct export are focused on. Exporting a product means to enter a foreign country as a target market, so the details about the modes of entry and channel decisions are given. Selecting a mode of entry is one of the hardest decisions the exporters face in the international arena. Anderson and Coughlan (1987) state that one of the first decisions to be made by companies entering a foreign market is whether to distribute through a company-owned (integrated) channel, or through and independent (non-integrated) channel.
