Abstract

This study examines the question of -popular culture and religion? through popular cultural commodities concerning tasawwuf in terms of popular religious representations in everyday life. The main research question is that -in the modernization process of Turkey and in a society which has experienced laicization on social level(law, education etc.) and secularization on individual level(family, worship, everyday life, etc.), in the period after 1980s and especially after 2000s, how religious and sufistic elements form popular culture by taking place incrementally in it; on which points it is articulated to popular culture and what kind of new religious narratives, images and representations appear from this articulation. Our goal is examining the transformations of the facts of religion and tasawwuf through this research question within the case of Mawlana and Mawlawism in terms of sociology of culture. In our research, written and audio-visual popular cultural commodities are studied through the methods such as textual analysis, discourse analysis, and semiotic analysis of films and advertisements. As a result of these analyses, it is found that those popular cultural commodities profanize sacred elements; religious elements form mainstream popular culture to a great extent; popular cultural commodities containing religious and sufistic elements are articulated to postmodernist understanding that refuses absolute reality; and tasawwuf plays a crucial role in defining religious field on philosophical, cultural and political level.Key Words: Tasawwuf, Mawlana and Mawlawism, popular culture, secularization.
