Abstract

Within the framework of historical archaeology, in this paper we analyze the changes in dress practices of European and Creole women and men during the Viceroyalty of the Río de La Plata (1776-1810) in the city of Buenos Aires (present-day Argentina). In particular, we want to discuss the transformations in the materialization and stylization of dressed-bodies, attending to the ways in which clothes could have been culturally valued and experienced in a context typically associated with the transition to modernity. The evidence analyzed in this work includes more than 40 post-mortem inventories and appraisals, listing and describing dress items held by women and men at the time of their death. On the basis of the results thus obtained, we discuss the magnitude and diversity of the changes observed in dressedbodies, and the ways in which these transformations could have been the product, or the producers, of specific practices and relationships between genders.
