Feijoo, Bayle y el caso Savonarola

Feijoo, Bayle y el caso Savonarola

Abstract

In this paper, our purpose is to show how the article «Savonarola» of Pierre Bayle’s Dictionnaire historique et critique was used as a source for the «Prólogo apologético» of volume III of the Teatro crítico universal that Benito Jerónimo Feijoo published in 1729. As is known, that «Prólogo» was composed by Feijoo in his defense against those who accused him of having presented the Savonarola case drawing excessively on French sources. The accusers targeted in particular the works of Gabriel Naudé, the Journal de Sçavans, and the Mémoires de Trévoux; nobody, however, and perhaps because it was a prohibited work in Spain, noticed that the true origin of many of Feijoo’s considerations was in the most famous work of the French Calvinist Pierre Bayle.
