Abstract

The goal of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of the dynamics of occupation of high altitude sites in the Puna of Salta during the middle Holocene. For this, a techno-morphological characterization of the lithic artifacts found in stratigraphy at Cueva Nacimiento 2 site (Salta, Argentina, 4,200 m.a.s.l.) was carried out. The analysis also included the macroscopic assessment of raw materials represented in the artefact assemblage recovered at that site. Based on the lithic evidence, a logistical use of a high altitude site is documented along with hunting behaviors, wild resource processing activities, and the production of retouched-edge tools on local raw materials. The presence of “San Martín” lithic projectile points, associated with a radiocarbon dating that corroborates its temporality, suggests the presence of hunting activities in this ravine during the early-midd-Holocene transition. The evidence of Saladillo artifacts allows us to propose a use of the cave by hunter-gatherers during the final midd-Holocene, with a strategy of high logistical mobility between resource patches.
