Abstract

In Ernesto Laclau's theory of hegemony, there is a key place for the question of political subjects. However, the development of elements that allow us to study how subjects are constructed is capable of collective action, and the struggle for hegemony is a problem that has been left open. This article works on this question and proposes a distinction between subjectivity, subject, and agent to address two issues in hegemony theory: the hegemonic mode of subject construction and the conditions of hegemonic contestation in a democratic context. This distinction allows for specific theoretical developments of the category of hegemony fundamental to political analysis, as well as helping to order a research agenda in the field of contemporary political theory.
