La bioética nació en la década de 1970 en los Estados Unidos, en un ambiente científico, y se extendió a todo el mundo como un intento de abordaje a algunos problemas propios del siglo 20: la revolución tecnocientífica, el rápido progreso biotecnológico, la catástrofe ambiental, la experimentación en seres humanos, entre otros. Tal abordaje se busca a través del diálogo interdisciplinario —basado en la dignidad de la persona y en un mínimo de valores y derechos humanos, como la concepción integral del hombre—, que sirva de criterio para la toma de decisiones.
