Antecedente de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible: Los objetivos de desarrollo del milenio

Abstract

En la Cumbre del Milenio de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU), en el mes de septiembre del año 2000, los líderes mundiales acordaron un conjunto de metas con el propósito de ser cumplido en un plazo de quince años, con el objetivo de combatir la pobreza, el hambre, las enfermedades, el analfabetismo, la degradación medioambiental y la discriminación contra las mujeres, entre otras. Estos objetivos se conocieron como los “Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio” (ODM) y constituyeron el antecedente inmediato a los “Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible” (ODS) que se están llevando adelante actualmente, a cumplirse en el período 2015-2030. Basado en estos antecedentes, se considera que, aunque este libro está centrado en los ODS, es imprescindible realizar una breve presentación de los ODM y sus resultados en América Latina.
