Abstract

A iniciativa "Espécies Nativas da Flora Brasileira de Valor Econômico Atual ou Potencial: de Uso Local e Regional", também conhecida como "Plantas para o Futuro" busca melhorar o conhecimento disponível em relação às espécies da biodiversidade nativa, ainda pouco conhecidas e subutilizadas, mas que apresentam enormes possibilidades de utilização pelos diversos setores da sociedade. Com levantamentos de campo e de literatura, esta iniciativa evidenciou os possíveis benefícios socioeconômicos e ambientais decorrentes do uso da biodiversidade nativa. Por meio desse esforço foram identificadas e priorizadas espécies de importância econômica, atual ou potencial, de modo a definir novas opções de cultivo para a agricultura familiar; ampliar as oportunidades de investimento no desenvolvimento de novos produtos pela indústria e contribuir, por exemplo, para a segurança alimentar e redução da vulnerabilidade do sistema alimentar brasileiro
