Abstract

This work presents the phylogenetic analysis of the mid-Holocene lanceolate projectile points from the southern Andean Highlands region. We applied the cladistics method and a total evidence approach, by integrating a robust set of morphological, metric and discrete data. Through this methodology, we documented a strong phylogenetic signal in the cultural data set, and a structure which fits the cladistic model of branching evolution. The obtained phylogenic tree reveals the pattern of evolutionary change of these artifacts as well as a process of diversification of point classes. We conclude that in the study area the diversification of projectile point classes occurred during the mid-Holocene in tandem with a general trend towards the reduction in size of the points; and associated with the spread of new hunting techniques. We discuss these results suggesting that this process of diversification was the result of an increased rate of technological innovation that accompanied population growth since the beginning of the mid-Holocene.
