Barndomstraumer og depresjon

Abstract

Summary Problem: How can traumatic experiences in childhood contribute to the development of depression? Background: This thesis discusses how physical and emotional abuse in childhood can lead to depression in adulthood. The goal of the thesis is to contribute to increased knowledge among social educators, so that they can better facilitate people who have been exposed to trauma and thus be better equipped to meet their needs. Method: To discuss and answer the problem, literature analysis is used as a method, based on quantitative studies and peer-reviewed articles. The articles were retrieved from PubMed, Oria and Global Index Medicus, with a limitation of the last decades, in line with guidelines from the educational institution. Through a systematic search process and the use of precise search terms related to childhood trauma and the development of depression, relevant research literature was identified and assessed based on thematic relevance, professional quality and methodological solidarity. Result: The findings in the thesis show that emotional abuse is more closely related to depression than physical abuse. Emotional abuse in childhood can greatly affect an individual's development, and lead to disturbances that make it difficult to regulate emotions and develop relationships. The thesis highlights that this is an issue that should be addressed at an early stage, before more serious psychological challenges develop. Discussion: Childhood trauma has a negative impact on mental health in adulthood, and such experiences can weaken the individual's ability to regulate emotions, manage stress and establish close relationships. Social educators have an important role in identifying and supporting individuals with such experiences. Increased knowledge and awareness of the topic are among the most important factors that the thesis highlights as crucial for being able to offer targeted facilitation and individually tailored follow-up.
