Abstract

In recent years, the role of the school principal has undergone significant changes, and never have there been greater expectations placed on a school leader than today (Robinson, 2022). From being a role primarily focused on administration and operation, it is now expected that principals also serve as educational leaders and facilitators of professional learning communities. This master's thesis sheds light on how schools develop through collective learning and development processes among principals in Værnesregionen. The research question is: What factors contribute to school leaders' perception of improved learning in principal networks within the new competency strategy? The study shows that participation in professional learning networks for principals increases understanding of professional learning communities and contributes to the development of their own professionalism, which in turn has significance for teachers' and students' learning. External support in the facilitation of such networks can be of great importance. The results also indicate that principal networks play an important role in providing necessary social support in a demanding workday. Although the principals enjoy their job, they find the work to be demanding and emotional exhaustion over time. Network learning is considered by informants to be less important than the support and security they gain through participation. The network can therefore be seen as an important job resource in the principal profession. Overall, the findings show that the principal network is an important development arena for schools to meet new demands and needs.
