Fysisk aktivitet og depresjon

Abstract

Title: Physical activity and depression Keywords: Physical activity, depression, adolescent, treatment Introduction: World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 264 million people suffers from depression, and it increases amongst the youth. The health care system lacks the resources to reach out to everyone in need of help, and not everyone responds to the traditional treatment. For that reason, it will be necessary to look for alternative treatment which requires less resources and are easily accessible. A good alternative can be physical activity. Purpose: The purpose of this bachelor´s thesis is to determine if physical activity can be an alternative treatment for adolescents with depression. Method: This study is a literature based study. It has been conducted with structured searches for recent research, where 5 research articles have been selected. Results: Based on the results from these research articles, two main topics where found relevant for using physical activity as an alternative treatment for adolescents with depression. These two topics are the effect of physical activity and the social aspect. Conclusion: Physical activity has been proven to reduce depressive symptoms amongst adolescents. Exercise performed in groups, will have an effect on the social aspect. It can lead to a further reduction of depressive symptoms, and contribute as a supplement to conventional treatment. Regularly physical activity will reduce the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms, and prevent relapse.
