Em 2003, um vasto estudo interdisciplinar do Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), intitulado The Future of Nuclear Power, desenhava o seguinte cenário: se até 2050 fossem construídas 1000 novas centrais nucleares, triplicando a capacidade instalada no mundo, a atmosfera terrestre estaria livre de 1,8 mil milhões de toneladas anuais de dióxido de carbono, que de outro modo seriam expelidos pelas chaminés de centrais térmicas a carvão. Isto bastaria para conter em 25 por cento o aumento nas emissões globais dos gases com efeito de estufa, responsáveis pelo aquecimento global.
