Abstract

Objective: To review the scientific literature related to the health effects of occupational exposure to rubber, specifically in the footwear industry. Method: Bibliograpgic review of articles retrieved from the MEDLINE (PubMed) bibliographic database up to March 2023. The search equation was formulated using the descriptors ''Occupational Exposure'', ''Rubber'', ''Shoes'', also using the related EntryTerms and the filters: ''Humans'' and ''Adult: 19+ years''. Results: From the 104 references retrieved from the database, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 4 articles were selected, all of which were observational studies, 1 of which was a case-control study and the other 3 were cohorts. The parameters assessed were target population, type of study, country, exposure time and follow-up period, objectives and outcomes, which were found to be in line with the requirements of our study. Conclusions: The results show inconclusive evidence for the association of health effects from occupational exposure to rubber in the footwear industry.
