Abstract

The goal of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the history of the community of nuns of the monastery of Santa Clara of Manresa since its foundation as Poor Clares in 1322 until the occupation of the monastic space for a new community of Dominican nuns from the monastery of Ntra. Sra. dels Àngels i Peu de la Creu of Barcelona, in 1602, to make visible the reception that the clarissan charism had in Central Catalonia. The research is divided into two distinct sections. The first is a theoretical reflection on the concepts and narratives that have supported the analysis of medieval feminine spirituality. In addition, this first part shows the historiographical framework developed on St. Clare and the Poor Clares, with particular emphasis on the Iberian and Catalan territories. The second section provides the analysis of the community of Santa Clara of Manresa taking as the main source for the research the notarial books on the community that had been preserved. This analysis is developed through five interrelated parts: the monastery’s foundation process, the experience of community life according to the urbanist rule, the creation and maintenance of a network of economic and social links, the disappearance of the community in the context of the negotiations for the re-occupation of the monastic space and, finally, as an epilogue, the perception the Dominicans who occupied the monastery had of their clarissan past, keeping alive the memory of the Poor Clares in Manresa until today.
