Optimização industrial de revestimentos cerâmicos com propriedades fotocatalíticas

Abstract

Este trabalho avalia o comportamento de diferentes titânias comerciais (em suspensão aquosa) na descoloração de soluções coradas de laranja II sob a acção da radiação visível artificial. A sua actividade fotocatalítica foi relacionada com diversas características relevantes dos pós, nomeadamente, as fases cristalinas presentes, o tamanho e a morfologia das partículas. As titânias mais eficientes foram depositadas sobre peças cerâmicas vidradas de uso comum tendo-se para tal utilizado dois processos: a serigrafia e a pulverização com aerógrafo. Foram testados diversos parâmetros nomeadamente: (i) a quantidade de titania depositada; (ii) a natureza da titania; (iii) a composição da mistura a depositar; e (iv) a temperatura de tratamento. Após apreciação do seu aspecto superficial e aderência ao suporte foi avaliada a capacidade fotodegradativa de soluções coradas. O estudo realizado permitiu concluir que as camadas obtidas por pulverização apresentam superior aderência ao suporte, menor rugosidade (logo maior facilidade de limpeza), e são esteticamente mais agradáveis. A quantidade de titania depositada também é um parâmetro importante. Peças com gramagens mais elevadas apresentam melhor desempenho. Em condições optimizadas obtém-se 50% de descoloração ao fim de 2 horas de irradiação; a quase total descoloração (96%) é atingida após 9 horas de ensaio, à taxa de reacção de 5,9x10-3 min-1. Assim, as peças cerâmicas com as camadas activas de titania são uma alternativa muito interessante ao uso dos óxidos em suspensão, tendo a enorme vantagem de não ser necessária a remoção das partículas no final do processo. Além do bom desempenho fotocatalítico, as peças apresentam superfície esteticamente agradável e de fácil limpeza, preenchendo assim os requisitos industriais e comerciais para este tipo de produtos.

In this work the photocatalytic behaviour of distinct commercial titania powders (used as aqueous suspension) was evaluated through the decolouration of Orange II aqueous solutions under artificial visible light radiation. The performance was correlated with relevant characteristics, such as the crystalline phases present, particle size and morphology. The most efficient TiO2 powders have been deposited by screen printing and jet-spraying on common glazed ceramic tiles. Several experimental variables were tested: (i) amount of deposited titania; (ii) titania manufacturer/source; (iii) composition; and (iv) firing temperature. After assessing its superficial appearance and adhesion to the substrate, the photocatalytic behaviour was evaluated in the degradation of Orange II dye solutions. The jet-sprayed layers have a better adhesion to the substrate, lower roughness (and thus are easier to clean), and are aesthetically more pleasant. The amount of titania deposited is also an important parameter. Pieces with a higher titania content exhibit better performance. The optimized layers show colour attenuation of 50% after two hours irradiation, and the degradation is almost complete (96%) after 9 hours, which corresponds to a reaction rate of 5.9x10-3 min-1. Thus, these layered ceramic tiles constitute an interesting alternative to the use of avoiding the removal of the exhausted powder at the end. The optimized material developed in this work, besides a good photocatalytic performance, displays an aesthetically pleasant surface, a good adhesion to the substrate, and is easy to clean, thus fulfilling the industrial and commercial requirements for these type of products.
