Perturbações do desenvolvimento da linguagem e insucesso escolar

Abstract

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is often late detected in elementary school. Early identification of children with DLD is crucial because of the impact it can have on reading and writing learning and on the child’s cognitive, emotional and social development. The main objective of the present study is to analyse the impact of DLD in school failure. It also intends to identify the linguistic domain more affected in DLD, analyse the relation between DLD and learning difficulties and, finally, to verify if the child’s behaviour influences the school performance in children with DLD. The sample is composed by 36 Portuguese native speaking children, who attend the 1st year of the 1st cycle of elementary school, in two different schools of Aveiro district. The instruments used for data collection were: socio-demographic questionnaire, TFF-ALPE, TL-ALPE and teacher’s questionnaire about school performance. Through the analysis of the obtained data, 30.5% of children were identified with DLD. Morphosyntax and metalinguistic awareness were the most affected linguistic domains. Through the answers of teacher’s questionnaire, a correlation between DLD and learning disabilities was found, it was also verified that school behavior also affects school performance in children with DLD, with a statistically significant association. Thus, DLD has an impact on reading and writing learning, and the intervention in speech therapy is essential to minimize school failure
