Abstract

La tercera ola de democratización reconfiguró los sistemas políticos de América Latina, poniendo fi n a décadas de dictaduras militares. Como excepción se mantuvo Cuba, como régimen soviético congelado en el Caribe. Con la llegada de la democracia se abrió un nuevo horizonte poliárquico en la región: nuevos entramados institucionales, grandes avances para garantizar el derecho universal al voto, el acceso al poder en condiciones de competencia o la celebración de elecciones libres y vigiladas son algunos de los principales hitos en este sentido. Sin embargo, las democracias latinoamericanas han experimentado en los últimos años un constante proceso de erosión: las instituciones se muestran ineficientes para canalizar las demandas ciudadanas, el bajo crecimiento económico ha empeorado los desequilibrios sociales y nuevos liderazgos autoritarios han ganado terreno. Para entender mejor los cambios que se han ido produciendo en la región en las últimas décadas, este libro ofrece al lector una aproximación multidisciplinar a la realidad latinoamericana, poniendo el foco en actores e instituciones, contexto socioeconómico, dinámicas y procesos, y relaciones internacionales.
