Abstract

This exploratory study, based on a qualitative approach, aims to study the continuity and concordance between Parenting Rearing Styles (PRS) of the Grandparents (Generation 1 - G1) and the Parents (Generation 2 - G2) and the concordance and discordance in perceptions of the PRS between the parents (G2) and adolescent (Generation 3 - G3) in intact nuclear families with adolescent children. It was conducted a cross-sectional study with multiple informants, with 102 intact nuclear families - father, mother and teenage children (15-19 years) (N = 306). Were used as instruments, the EMBU-P to assess the perceptions of parents (G2) in relation to their parenting practices, and EMBU-M to assess the perceptions of parents (G2) and adolescents (G3) in relation to the parenting practices of their parents (G1 and G2, respectively). Through the performed analysis of non-hierarchical clusters, it was identified three types of PRS- Authoritative, Authoritarian and Permissive. The data analysis took account of three generations and family lines (Maternal and Paternal). The results show that: (a) the general pattern of intergenerational transmission of PRS more frequent, is the continuity between the PRS of Grandparents (G1) and the Father/ Mother and disagreement between the perception of the adolescent (G3) and Parents (G2) in relation to the PRS of the Generation 2 (b) the most frequent pattern of maternal line is the same most frequent general pattern, (c) the most frequent pattern of paternal line is the total continuity and intergenerational concordance, i.e., the Grandparents PRS (G1) is equal to each other and equal to the Parents (G2), and the perception of parents (G2) and Children (G3) is consistent, (d) with regard to intra-generational convergence / divergence, the PRS type more convergent is the Authoritative despite the intra-generational divergence being more frequent. The results points to the possibility of families adopt and/or modify models of families of origin in order to create an idiosyncratic PRS.
