O envolvimento dos filhos no conflito conjugal e o ajustamento sócio-emocional dos adolescentes

Abstract

This research examined the effects of the child's involvement in marital conflict, socio-emotional adjustment of adolescents, particularly in internalizing symptoms (anxiety/depression), externalizing symptoms (aggressive behavior) and academic attainment. The differences between boys and girls and differences among students of basic education and high school were also analyzed. Participated in the study 100 portuguese adolescents of both sexes, aged between 12 and 19 years. The questionnaire Security in the Interparental Subsystem Scales was applied to report involvement in marital conflict through the dimensions of emotional security in interparental subsystem; the Youth Self-Report instrument to analyze the symptoms of internalizing and externalizing adolescents; and, lastly, the description of the test scores to assess the academic attainment. The results show significant direct effects between internal representations of interparental relations and the aggressive behavior of adolescents, symptoms of externalizing. In boys there were no significant relationships, however, the girls have a direct effect between internal representations of interparental relations and aggressive behavior, externalizing symptoms. Finally, basic education students showed direct effects in internal representations of interparental relations either with the anxiety/depression, internalizing symptoms, and with aggressive behavior, externalizing symptoms. In turn, high school students only showed a significant relationship between emotional reactivity and anxiety/depression, internalizing symptoms. No associations were found between the dimensions of emotional security in interparental subsystem and academic attainment. The results of this study will be discussed in relation to their implications. The limitations of the study were presented as well as suggestions for further studies.
