Relação entre bruxismo do sono e asma

Abstract

Introduction: The episodes of rythimc masticatory muscular activity (RMMA) tend to occur simultaneously to sleep arousals. This kind of events organizes in a repetitive sequence, designated of cyclic alterning pattern (CAP) that recurs with a periodicity of 20-40 seconds coinciding with the occurrence rhythm of RMMA. In this way, the literature suggests that sleep arousals, although not acting as causal factors of sleep bruxism (SB), promote a physiological context that stimulates its manifestation. In turn, asthma, in particularly when not controled, can present nocturnal exacerbations that interfere in the structure of sleep, as perturbations, contributing for the rise of frequency of sleep arousal episodes. Objectives: The presente study set out to investigate the prevalence of SB in a population of asthamic adults. Materials and Methods: In a sample of 236 adult participants with asthma was applied a questionnaire that incorporated the criteria refered by the International Classification of Sleep Disorders, third edition (ICSD) relative to the diagnosis of SB and questions towards the terapeutics for asthma and diagnoses of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The colected data was analysed and it was determined the prevalence of SB in this sample. It was applied the fisher’s exact test with the purpose of establishing an association between the medication intake for asthma treatment in SOS and the presence of tooth wear, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The prevalence of SB in the studied population was 28,81%. It wasn’t verified any statistically significant associtation between the other studied variables. Conclusion: Despite the limitations of this study it was possible to verify that the prevalence of SB in the population of asthmatic adults its superior to the verified in the general adult population. Since the scientific literature does not yet recognize this relationship, further studies are proposed to clarify this possible interaction.
